The Old Entomology Cabinet

Specially commissioned by the creative director of the Old Vic theatre, the project’s brief was to produce some interesting cabinetry that would fit in with an existing desk. We were very fortunate enough to have in our possession a collection of Mahogany butterfly specimen cabinets from 1952. We then set ourselves the challenge to create a viable and interesting set off cabinets that would fully utilized this material.

The old drawer runners would become the main details throughout, lending themselves perfectly to a set of marquetry doors and drawer fronts alongside the end panels, and incorporating a series of hidden locks.

The box units of the main cabinet used the same detail but in its original form protruding from the surface and creating three differing textures, all materials used were from the original butterfly specimen cabinets.
